NSW Traveller’s Trophy 2014-2015

The NSW Travellers’ Trophy concluded on Saturday 21st February at Narrabeen Lake.  Racing was incredibly close in the light Sou-easter.  The course included three wing marks, making an M-shaped downwind leg which provided plenty of opportunities to pump down the reaches.  The three Narrabeen club races were dominated by local Rob Jones, famous for wearing only speedos underneath his seat harness, whose incredible upwind pointing and speed proved to be unbeatable.  Two of Saturday’s three races counted towards the Travellers’ Series and luckily for the rest of us, Rob did not enter the series.  Roger Crawford and Rod Hozack, also Narrabeen regulars, but known to wear pants, also sailed well to stay in front of Karen Murden and Dave West of Middle Harbour.   Dave’s two firsts in previous rounds were enough to gain him the winners podium for the series on count-back from Roger, with Karen Murden in third.  The President’s Award went to Ian Makin, who as a super-heavyweight, sailed superbly in conditions that were very much against him in rounds two and three and who is returning to sailing after a twenty year break from the sport.  We also welcomed Mark Fitzgerald back to the class in his first races since the late eighties.  Gerard Meli who has been windsurfing for four months had fantastic board-speed upwind and is one to watch in coming seasons.
