Rainy weather did nothing to dampen the spirits of the 15 competitors at last weekend’s NSW State Championships.
Actually those of us who chose to camp at the sailing club might have been feeling slightly “dampened” as we packed up our dripping tents on Sunday morning… But the breeze was good, the courses were fantastic and the hot chips afterwards were AMAZING!
The fleet was very competitive and included a nice mix of experienced sailors, new faces, young and old, male and female sailors from Sydney, the Central Coast and Melbourne. We raced as part of the Zhik single-handed regatta at South Lake Macquarie Amateur Sailing Club on a trapezoidal course with Bic Technos, Bic Open Dinghies, Optimists and Flying Ants. Nacras, Moths and Lasers raced nearby. It was a really well run regatta, with a friendly, inclusive family vibe and super-professional race officers and boat crew.
Paul Ivshenko led the windsurfer fleet by a few points at the end of the first day, although the top 6 or 7 places changed constantly through every race. A little more wind and steeper chop on the Sunday changed the pecking order slightly and Michael Lancey dominated, with Paul’s son Matt, Sam Treharne and Melanie Webb hot on his heels. One point separated Paul and Michael before the final race, with Michael coming out on top to win the overall point score and the Medium-weight division.
The 1st Heavy-weight was Stuart Gilbert, 1st light-weight was Paul Ivshenko and 1st woman Melanie Webb.
Mat Hanaut sailed superbly in his first Windsurfer regatta, while his daughter joined the ‘try windsurfing’ session with the Little Rippers Bic team.
A special thanks to Walshy who organised the excellent glass-ware trophies and who had a disappointing regatta, ending Day 2 with the bottom of his semi-transparent board looking like an animated Monet painting because of all the water sloshing around under the skin.
