This section shows the scoring methodology used to judge Free Style windsurfing. Generic sailing instructions for a freestyle event are provided below for guidance, however sailing instructions for an Event will override any generic instructions.
Competition will be conducted in the following divisions:-
2. COMPETITION ORDER
The order in which competitors will compete in both the preliminary and finals will be decided by a random draw. This order will be posted on the Official Notice Board not less than 30 minutes before the start of the preliminary competition and not less than 10 minutes before the start of the finals.
3. COMPETITION FORMAT
3.1 The duration of each routine shall be 3 minutes.
3.2 The raising of a yellow warning flag with one sound signal will indicate that the judges are ready for the first or next competitor.
3.3 Competitors shall signal the start of their routine to the judges by raising one arm above their head at which time the yellow flag will be lowered.
3.4 A competitor’s routine will be considered started if, after 1 minute from the raising of the yellow flag, the competitor has not signaled the start of their routine at which time the yellow flag will be lowered.
3.5 At 2 minutes and 30 seconds after the start of a competitor’s routine, a sound signal will be made indicating there are 30 seconds remaining in the routine.
3.6 At 2 minutes and 50 seconds after the start of a competitor’s routine, a sound signal will be made indicating there are 10 seconds remaining in the routine.
3.7 At 3 minutes after the start of a competitor’s routine, one long sound signal will be made indicating the end of the routine. Judges will score dismounts up to 3 seconds after this signal has been made.
Competitors who fail to show or who fail to enter the course area within one minute of the yellow flag being raised will be scored Did Not Start (DNS) and the next competitor will be called immediately.
All signals and announcements will be made from the judging position.
4. THE COURSE AREA
The location of the course area will be posted on the Official Notice Board not less than 30 minutes before the start of the preliminary competition.
The course area will be approximately 50 metres square with each corner defined by a mark the description of which will be posted on the Official Notice Board not less than 15 minutes before the start of the preliminary competition.
A competitor who is not competing shall not enter the course area or sail immediately to windward of it unless entering or exiting for their routine.
Competitors shall immediately exit the course area at the completion of their routine.
5.1 Written protests are not required (changes rule 61.2).
5.2 A competitor intending to protest shall immediately inform the judges of their intention (changes rule 61.3). The protest hearing will be held adjacent to the judging position as soon as possible.
5.3 Infringements of generic SIs 5.4, 7 and SIs 2, 4.3 and 4.4 hereof shall not be grounds for protest by a competitor but may result in a protest under rules 60.2 and 60.3 (changes rule 60.1(a)).
Competition will only be judged whilst the competitor is wholly within the course area.
A competitor’s routine will be scored based on three main components as follows:-
Degree of difficulty of the individual trick.
Control of the rig or board.
Overall impression of the routine with respect to fluidity, style and artistic impression.
6.3 A sample of the Freestyle Scoring Sheet will be posted on the Official Notice Board not later than 30 minutes before the start of competition.
A mens final consisting of 5 men and a womens final consisting of 3 women may be conducted at the discretion of the judges.
Competitors will be ranked in accordance with their overall score in their respective gender division with ties broken in accordance with rule A7.
